  • Xiidra and Miebo

    Hello,
I was just prescribed Xiidra and Miebo for really dry eyes here in Colorado, and my doctor said he didn't have any data on of these Medicaid are safe for breastfeeding and/or pregnancy. I am currently breastfeeding a 19 month old, and am hoping to get pregnant again in a few months. Do you have any thoughts on the safety or risk of these? Thanks so much!

Both of these are eye drops that work locally on the surface of the eye, resulting in very minimal is any absorption into the bloodstream. Based on the limited systemic exposure, it is unlikely that any of these medications would enter the breast milk, and no adverse effects are expected for a breastfeeding child, especially one as old as 19 months. To avoid any systemic absorption of all eye drops, you can press gently at the inside corner of your eye for 30–60 seconds after instilling the drops.
