  • Emsella treatments

    Hi there,

I hope this message finds you well. I am an IBCLC seeking your expertise regarding the safety of Emsella treatments for breastfeeding mothers.

A client of mine, who is exclusively breastfeeding her 12-week-old infant, has been advised by her physiotherapist to consider Emsella therapy for pelvic floor recovery as the next step for her. Understandably, she is concerned about the safety of undergoing this treatment while nursing her baby and reached out to see if I had any information to share.

In reviewing the manufacturer's guidelines, BTL lists several contraindications for Emsella, including pregnancy, metal implants, and electronic implants. However, breastfeeding is not explicitly mentioned as a contraindication.

Despite this, recommendations from medical spas vary when a I did a search:
    • Some providers suggest postponing Emsella treatments during breastfeeding due to the lack of specific safety data for nursing mothers by the manufacturer.
    • Others indicate that Emsella can be used during breastfeeding, with treatments commencing around eight to ten weeks postpartum to support pelvic floor recovery and some say not until baby has started solids at six months.

Given these differing positions and the absence of explicit guidance from the manufacturer, I am reaching out to Infant Risk for your opinion. Your insights would be invaluable in helping me provide accurate guidance to my client and for any future mums who contact me.

Thank you for your time and expertise.
