  • Meptin & Theophylline

A mother with a 4-month-old infant is prescribed Meptin (25 mcg) 1x2 oral pc and Theophylline (200 mg) 1x2 oral pc, can you please advise the breastfeeding management for this case? Thank you very much.

Rat studies showed that procaterol hydrochloride is excreted in breast milk, but there is no data on human milk. Based on the pharmacokinetics, it is likely that it will enter human milk.
Theophylline is an L3. It has a long half life and milk concentrations are equal to plasma concentrations which has caused irritability in breastfed infants. We do not recommend nursing if this mother is going to be taking these medications on a regular basis.
