  • Metformin and breastfeeding

    Hello,
I have been recently diagnosed as Type 2 and prescribed metformin 500 mg extended release to be taken once at bedtime. I am currently still nursing my almost 22 month old daughter and was wondering if it is safe to take this medication.
    Thank you!

    Penelope:

We data on Metformin in breastfeeding mothers and its pretty clear that it is quite safe to use in breastfeeding mothers. Less than a percent of the maternal dose actually gets to the infant.

Infant development has been noted to be absolutely normal. Further, the fact that your infant is 22 months old further supports that there is little to no risk at this time interval, as the dose of "milk" the infant gets is minimal.
