  • Scabies treatment and newborn

    Hello,

I contracted scabies through work about a month ago (did topical permethrin treatment x2, 1 week apart), and then had concern for reinfestation about a week before my due date (occupational health was not too convinced, but agreed to prescribe treatment for my peace of mind). I did topical permethrin again, and since then gave birth to a healthy full-term baby on 3/16. The rash is completely gone, but to be safe I wish to do another round of treatment (would have been due for the 1 week dose on 3/17, but this was just 1 day after delivery, and since treatment can be repeated 14 days out I opted to wait.

Any recommendations on doing the second treatment with topical permethrin vs PO ivermectin? My concern with permethrin is not being able to have skin-to-skin contact with my newborn (though I know otherwise it is safe for breastfeeding). Ivermectin would be much easier but my understanding it does enter breast milk.

    Thank you!

If you feel like you need an additional treatment, topical permethrin would be preferable due to your baby's age.
