My doctor prescribed this 500mg 3x/day for 14 days for CDiff (because I broke out in hives after trying Vancomycin) and was advised to stop breastfeeding. I talked to my baby’s doctor and they said it would probably be okay, but referred me here for more up to date info. Should I stop breastfeeding or will my baby be okay? What are some symptoms to look out for?

Metronidazole does transfer into breast milk, but the amount is much lower than the doses safely given to infants for treatment. C. difficile spores are very resilient and can survive on surfaces for long periods, so strict hygiene is key to preventing spread. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the bathroom and before eating or preparing food, and disinfect hard surfaces with a bleach-based cleaner. With these precautions in place, you can continue breastfeeding safely—there’s no need to stop nursing.
Hope this helps!
