How long after receiving a single does of Valium (5-10mg) for a laser eye surgery procedure would a mother have to wait before the Valium is out of her system and she may safely resume breastfeeding? How long is the half life of valium?

    Dear Sarah,
Valium has a half-life of 43 hours, therefore, it would be around 10-12 days before all of it is out of her system. How old is the baby? Dr. Hale recommends waiting approximately 10-12 hours after taking the medication before resuming breastfeeding and pumping and dumping in the meantime. Hope this is helpful. If you have any further questions, please contact the InfantRisk Center at (806)352-2519.
    Sincerely,
    Maria Milla, MD
