I have a severe herniation of L4/L5 with constant right back and sciatica pain. I have tried everything except gabapentin. Orthopedic won’t prescribe gabapentin but he also tells me not to take Motrin while breastfeeding so his knowledge is very limited when it comes to breastfeeding. Is gabapentin safe to start? I have an 8 month old who is 25 pounds. Full term, no medical conditions.

Gabapentin is a medication that is generally compatible with breastfeeding. It has a fairly low transfer to milk and moderately low risk after infants are over 1 month old (assuming dosages are reasonable). There is a risk of sedation, so it is recommended that you monitor your baby for poor feeding or excessive fatigue. If this occurs, you may need to adjust things a bit. Feel free to call the nurse line to discuss dosing if you decide to take this. (806) 352-2519.
