  • Tramadol 50mg while breastfeeding

    Hi there Support,

My Dr prescribed me 50Mg Tramadol twice daily for short term use - to aid with the pain from tendonitis due to lifting our 99th percentile baby. Recently the discomfort has been pretty disruptive during work and overnight so for the last 10 days i was taking one tablet morning and night - previously I was just taking it on occasion when things got bad.

I started reading online about it and there's mixed opinion about the use of tramadol while breastfeeding which has me very alarmed as I don't want to negatively impact our baby.

The other posts on the InfantRisk Center are from mothers who delay breastfeeding for multiple hours after medicating. I haven't been delaying feeding our baby (9 month old) - is there anything wrong with doing this short term?

I haven't noticed any changes in her, however we've both been sick recently and I think she's been napping more frequently - I only assume this is due to her ongoing flu symptoms but after reading about tramadol online I'm getting pretty paranoid.

    Your advice is appreciated greatly

A small amount of tramadol will pass to breast milk, however, with this dosage and your infants size, I would not expect it to cause significant problems. You could try waiting to nurse 4hrs after taking it in attempt to see if she is less sleepy. Depending on your tendonitis location, you may consider asking your provider if you are a good candidate for a Kenalog injection for pain control. This would be compatible with nursing and wound not cause sedation.
