What do we know about the safety of the drug Aulin 100 mg (nimesulide)? My friend was prescribed it by a neurologist for back pain at a dose of 2x daily. She is breastfeeding her 12-month-old son. Thank you.

While it has not been studied in lactation specifically, looking at the properties of Aulin, some of it will probably get into breast milk. The exact amount is unknown, but if there is a large amount it could cause kidney and liver complications. This is unlikely due to infant age, however, it is a possibility. If she waits 4-5 hours after taking it to nurse, she could limit infant exposure. Medications like ibuprofen and naproxen are preferred and acceptable while nursing.
