  • Managing Chronic Migraines while Breastfeeding

Hi I am a mom of 2 and suffer from chronic migraine. For the past five years I have been taking celebrex (an NSAID) in combination with supplements and a strict diet to manage my migraines. However, celebrex is no longer doing the trick and I will probably need to start Namenda (memantine hydrochloride) or Aimovig for treating my migraines, My neurologist says starting these meds will mean I will have to wean my 21 month old, but I would really like to continue nursing him. He only nurses a few times a day for 10 minutes at a time, so overall its a low volume. Do you think Namenda or Aimovig would be safer for him? Thank you Infant Risk Center for your important work!

Hi there! Aimovig would be the best option out of these two. The monoclonal antibodies, especially those that are injected, are very large and unlikely to enter the milk. I hope you get some relief!
