From what I can tell, this theory originated in France in the 1960's. There doesn't seem to be any new literature on the topic though, although I know it is recommended clinically. I will assign the topic to a student look into it further, and see if we can come up with any ideas of why it would work.
Unfortunately, we haven't come up with any rationale for this mechanism...or any evidence for its efficacy. It doesn't look like it has been studied since the theories were postulated in the '60s. As it is a vitamin, it is unlikely anyone will take a close look.
