  • Hibiclens - Chlorhexidine- bath while nursing

I am prepping for a minor surgery tomorrow and, as instructed by my doctor, showered with Hibiclens (4% Chlorhexidine gluconate solution). I used a bunch, but I'm not sure how much, applying it outside of the shower, waiting a moment, then rinsing it off. I avoided my nipples (and face and genitals, per instructions), but I certainly applied it everywhere else.

Only afterwards did I read it may affect nursing. Is it safe to nurse or pump and save milk after in-shower application of a bunch of Hibiclens topically?

    Bostonmommy:

Yes, as long as you thoroughly wash your nipples/areolas well with plain soap, not hibiclens, to remove most of the chlorhexidine.
