Methylprednisolone (Medrol dose pack) is considered a Class C in pregnancy meaning either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the fetus and there are no controlled studies in women, or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs in this class should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Infants born of mothers who have received substantial doses of corticosteroids during pregnancy, should be carefully observed for signs of hypoadrenalism. Since adequate human reproduction studies have not been done with corticosteroids, the use of these drugs in pregnancy requires that the possible benefits of the drug be weighed against the potential hazards to the fetus. Since you are passed the first trimester, the risk of birth defects would be minimal. A low dose, short course of steroids is unlikely to cause hypoadrenalism in your infant, but you should consult with your OB physician about risks versus benefits of this medication during pregnancy.

I am 30 weeks pregnant and have been prescribed medrol dose pack for poison ivy, pharmacy states its contraindicated in pregnancy. Is it really safe for me and baby??
