  • Which Heartburn Medicine is the safest/best to take during pregnancy?

My midwife said I could take Pepcid, Zantac, Prevacid, or Tagamet. Which is the safest/best to take. Tums do nothing other than make me feel like throwing up.

    Dear EMC,

All four medications are class B in pregnancy, so all four are probably safe to use. The Pepcid, Zantac, and Prevacid probably do not increase the risk of teratogenicity in humans. Although Cimetidine (Tagamet) is not expected to increase the risk of congenital anomalies, it should be avoided in pregnancy due to androgenic effects.
