I just had surgery Wednesday to perform a laser lithotripsy and a stent insertion for a kidney stone. The doctor told me to just quit breastfeeding because it was not safe with the Levaquin. I am not willing to give up, but I will pump & dump. I asked him how long I should do that and he was unsure, said a week should be fine. Is a week sufficient? Or should it be longer. I received 500mg of Levaquin by IV infusion prior to surgery. I am also now on Cipro twice a day for a week, although I was told it was relatively safe to take when breastfeeding I wanted to check. I was referred here by a member of the Le Leche League Forum.

Randi1986:
I agree that it is relatively safe. About 2-6% of the maternal dose gets to the infant and this is not generally enough to cause problems in an infant. One thing you could do is feed human milk half the time and feed formula the rest if you want.
I doubt this much ciprofloxacin is going to bother an infant.
