Dear Pumpingmom,
Cephalexin (Keflex) is a typical first generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Minimal amounts of the drug enter into breastmilk and is considered to be compatible with breastfeeding. The time the drug will be highest in your breastmilk is 1 hour after your dose. Half of the drug should be metabolized out of your system in 1 to 1-1/2 hours. In 6 to 8 hours, all of the drug should be metabolized out of your system. You should observe for diarrhea in your infant. If you have further questions, call the InfantRisk Center at 806-352-2519. We are open Monday through Friday, 8 to 5, CT.
Sincerely,
Cindy Pride, MSN, CPNP
