  • Azithromycin and third trimester

New here and have a question. I just got diagnosed with bronchitis and sinusitis and have been prescribed a z-pak (Azithromycin) 250mg for 5 days and would like to know how safe it is to take at 33 weeks pregnant. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Robocp4,

Azithromycin is rated a P3-benefits likely to exceed the risk. "Available data from animal and human reproduction studies suggest, that it is non-teratogenic and safe for pregnancy use. This is a macrolide antibiotic, effective in the treatment of an extensive range of susceptible microbial infections, e.g. acute otitis media, upper and lower respiratory tract infections, and sexually-transmitted diseases (Chlamydia and gonorrhea). Relatively few studies have been conducted to determine the fetal safety of azithromycin use in pregnancy. Moreover, in existing published studies, the data consists of only small numbers of patient exposures. However, available data from animal and human reproduction studies suggest, that it is non-teratogenic and safe for pregnancy use. To date, no reports have documented adverse events on human fetuses. The FDA classes it as pregnancy category B, i.e. one that has not been associated with toxic effects at any stage of pregnancy, based on animal and human data, with no controlled studies in pregnant women." (Medications and Mothers' Milk database, Dr Thomas Hale PhD).
