Calcium and Vitamin D current recommendations

Dear maplecrest,
The RDA for calcium during breastfeeding is 1300 mg daily and for vitamin D 400 to 600 IU/day. Excessive doses of vitamin D can produce elevated calcium levels in the breastfeeding infant so mothers should not exceed 10,000 IU/day. The mother may want to have vitamin D levels done as many women are deficient who do not get adequate levels of sun exposure. Vitamin D synthesis from sun exposure varies among ethnic groups. Vitamin D plays a vital role in calcium absorption. Also, make sure the mother is eating an adequate diet especially dairy products and vegetables and fruits and is taking her prenatal vitamins.
Sincerely,
Cindy Pride, MSN, CPNP
