  • Vitamin B6 Vasospasm

Your book indicates that moms should not take more than 40 mg of vitamin B6 per day. Dr Jack Newman's protocol for the treatment of vasospasm and Raynaud's Phenomenon recommends 100 mg 2x/day for at least a couple weeks. Do you consider this amount unsafe?

    Dear Juliwalter,

Vitamin B 6 has been associated with seizures (rarely) at doses of 300 mg/day or more. Also, Vitamin B 6 decreases prolactin levels at doses greater than 600 mg/day which would likely decrease mom's milk supply. Dr. Hale's recommendation on vitamin supplementation in general is to stay within the recommended daily amount (RDA) to prevent untoward effects. Dr. Hale recommends nifedipine sustained release formulation, 30 to 60 mg per day, for the treatment of nipple vasospasm. Dr. Hale will be back in the office Tuesday if you would like further information.

    Sincerely,
