Is it safe to take SAM-e while breastfeeding? It helps so much more than SSRIs for me. If so, what dosage?

Dear Lesliepr,
S-adenosyl-l-methionine (Sam-e) is derived from adenosine triphosphate and the amino acid, l-methionine. It is a naturally occurring substance in most body tissues and fluids. There have been no reports of Sam-e use in breastfeeding women.
Sincerely,

Hi, thanks for your post.
As mentioned before, there are no safety studies of SAM-e in breastfeeding women. I am also not able to find published information on how this substance affects young children, or how long it persists in the body. It would be a very difficult thing to test for, so that information may not be forthcoming in the foreseeable future. Without knowing this, we cannot make a recommendation for or against using this supplement while breastfeeding. It would seem reasonable to treat your condition with a more traditional (and better studied) drug until your child is ready to wean.
Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if this has not completely answered your question.*(806)352-2519
