    breastfeeding and Podofilox

    Hello i have a patient that is nursing at night an 18month old and she is also in need of treatment with Podofilox. Is there any good information out there with this med and breastfeeding.

    Dear Heidikim,

    Dr. Hale states that podofilox is a strong antimitotic agent used to treat genital warts and Condyloma acuminatum. If used in small amounts, plasma levels are virtually undetectable. However, if used in larger amounts and areas, plasma levels are detectable. It is probably relatively unlikely that this agent will enter milk avidly, however, it is so toxic to cells, that if present in milk it could be problematic. It would be advisable to limit exposure of breastfeeding mothers to this agent, and to wait at least 4 hours to breastfeed following its application. I'd suggest avoiding this product if at all possible during breastfeeding.
