    Hi,
    I was wondering if the skincare line Neocutis is safe to use while breastfeeding? I have not been able to find any information on their website regarding this issue. Thank you!

    We do not have data on the majority of the ingredients. Some are probably harmless, some we are not sure of, but usually topical use is less likely to penetrate milk as much as an oral medication would.

    The salicylic acid is rated an L3-no data-probably compatible. [COLOR=#333333][FONT=lucida grande]Systemic absorption depends on the concentration of the product used, the amount applied, the surface area treated, and duration of use. Absorption increases with the duration of use. The systemic absorption following topical administration has been found to range from 9.3 to 25.1%. Due to significant systemic absorption, prolonged use of topical salicylic acid should be used with some caution. [/FONT][/COLOR]Wait 2-3 hours after application to breastfeed, use sparingly and limit the number of times it is applied. The main concern is the theoretical risk of Reyes Syndrome, but salicylic acid [COLOR=#333333][FONT=lucida grande]is not known to be associated with Reyes syndrome in infants and children.[/FONT][/COLOR]

    Zinc oxide is rated L2-limited data-probably compatible. [COLOR=#333333][FONT=lucida grande]Dermal absorption of zinc oxide is minimal. No statistically significant increases in zinc levels occurred in the serum following administration of 40% zinc oxide ointment. Topical application in lactating mother is unlikely to be clinically relevant in the breastfeeding infant. Use sparingly. A sign of zinc toxicity, metal fume fever, which can be identified by fever, chills, myalgias, vomiting, and malaise, may decrease milk production.
