I saw your posting regarding Icy Hot and Pregnancy but was wondering about Icy Hot for breastfeeding moms. I have a mom who came into the clinic who asked about its use. Thank you!

Dear jenandbrandon,
Dr. Hale states that menthol is commonly used for topical analgesic and sore throat relief. A very low amount of menthol is absorbed systemically from topical application. A very low amount of menthol is transferred into breastmilk. Approximately 0.063% of the maternal dose is transferred into breastmilk. Adverse effects to infant from breastfeeding are unlikely due to low relative dose and first-pass metabolism.
Sincerely,
Cindy Pride, MSN, CPNP
