  • Clindamycin Phosphate and Benzoyl Peroxide Gel, 1%/5%

    My dermatologist prescribed me topical Clindamycin Phosphate and Benzoyl Peroxide Gel, 1%/5% for acne. She said this was compatible with breastfeeing, but I couldn't find anything online and wanted a second opinion before I start use. Would use of this topical medication be safe for breastfeeding? Thank you in advance!

    Hi, thanks for your post.

    Very little of either component (clinda or benzoyl peroxide) gets into the bloodstream when you use it on your skin. We estimate that an exclusively breastfeeding infant would get about .01% of the clindamycin that you put on your skin delivered in the breastmilk. Clinda is used directly in babies at weight-based doses proportional to what adults take for a serious systemic infection. Benzoyl peroxide is discussed in more detail here:
