Dear Carom,
Protopic is a topical form of tacrolimus, that was recently approved for the treatment of moderate to severe eczema. Absorption via skin is minimal, combined with the poor oral bioavailability of this product, it is not likely a breastfed infant will receive enough following maternal topical use to produce adverse effects.
Also, please remember to wash your hands thoroughly after application of this ointment.

Would this be safe for a breastfeeding mother to use for areolar eczema that started after baby began solids? Already rinsing after feeding, using hypoallergenic detergent on clothes, no soaps or lotions to the area. Dermatologist prescribed desonide ointment a year ago but now seeking alternatives to steroids. Child is 2.5 years old.
thank you.
