  • Retinol Serum while breastfeeding

Hi!! I have an 8month old, only nurse at night, but I JUST Started using topical retinol serum for melasma.. It’s only twice a day every other day for 9 days.. my pediatrician told me to stop breastfeeding but it literally makes my heart hurt not being able to feed him! I was wondering if the small amount I do nurse and the infrequent retinol dosing is that terrible for him? Thank you!!

    StephCain,

Absorption of retinol following topical application is minimal. However, breastfeeding mothers should not use retinol/tretinoin orally because it could have untoward effects in the breastfeeding infant.
