  • Prednisone and breastfeeding

I've been prescribed 5mg of Prednisone daily for 6 days, for my severe atopic dermatitis flare up. I am currently breastfeeding a 3 month old. Are there any concerns? At this level, will my milk supply be impacted?

When does the medication level peak in the milk? I could time it based on that.

    Thank you.

    Dorium,

Prednisone is rated an L2- Limited Data-Probably Compatible. The RID (relative infant dose) is only 0.35-5.3%. Prednisone peaks at 1-2 hours and half is out in 2-3 hours. You should be ok taking this medication since you are on a super low dose and on it for such a short period of time. It may decrease your milk supply, but this is usually temporary while taking the medication, but again it is such a low dose you may not see any reduction at all. Hope this helps.
