  • Prednisone 5mg

How safe would it be to breastfeed on prednisone 5mg daily for 5 months for a joint flair until another medication takes effect? How much medication will baby get? He is 8 months old.

  • #2
This low dose of prednisone would likely be OK for an 8 month old. We expect your baby to get 5% of a weight-adjusted dose, which is considered acceptable. I suggest you work with your pediatrician to monitor the linear growth rate of your baby. The drug has a 2-3 hour half-life, so trying to time the drug before your biggest time gap between feedings would help reduce his exposure.
