I recently posted a question for a client on a low potency topical steroid, alclometasone. The patient has recently been switched halobetasol (Ultravate), which as I understand it, is a super potent class 1 topical steroid. Your response to my low potency question was that as long as it wasn't applied directly to the nipple, absorption and subsequent infant exposure is probably far too low to have any effect. Does the same hold true for this super potent steroid?

    Dear LCBrenda,

The answer to your question depends on the surface area on which the medication will be applied, the amount, and number of times per day. If it is a small amount, to be used a few times, and over a small surface area, then its probably okay. Avoid using this super potent steroid over large surface areas, and in big amounts.
