  • Betnesol retention enema

    Hi,

I have a 5 week old baby and take half of a betnesol retention enema twice a week as treatment. I was wondering your opinion on this medicine and breastfeeding. I have been having more symptoms show so I am supposed to up my dosage to 1/2 a bag every other night. The enema is 5mg in a 100ml solution. Thank you very much.

    Dear Uc since 2012,

Betamethasone is considered an intermediate potency steroid. In small doses, most steroids are certainly not contraindicated in nursing mothers. Following administration, wait at least 4 hours if possible prior to feeding your infant to reduce exposure. With prolonged therapy, the infant should be closely monitored for growth and development.
