  • High dose prednisone and breastfeeding

    Hi
i am currently taking 1250 mg of oral prednisone for 5 days with no taper for a MS flare. However, I am exclusively breast feeding and pumping. My plan is to pump and dump for 12 hours after dosage and use my stored milk during that time. Or should I avoid breastfeeding totally until I’m done? My baby is only 1 month old. I don’t know if that’s too much medication being transferred.

    Pepc2018,

We think 12 hours is a good amount of time to wait as 93% of the prednisone is out of your milk at that time, and it is for a short duration of time. This high dose may decrease your milk supply.
