  • IV cortisone

I currently reside in Italy and went to the ER for acute tonsillitis. They gave me an IV and gave me cortisone by IV and said not to breastfeed for a week. I’m not sure how much they gave me but the medication was Bentelan 4MG/2ML IMIV 3F 1.0. I’m trying to find out if their advice of not breastfeeding for a week is accurate? I would really hate to pump and dump for an entire week. My dauuggter is exclusively breastfed and is 2 months old.

    Dheckman14,

Bentelan (betamethasone) is rated an L3-no data-probably compatible. The half-life of this medication is 5.6 hours. "Brief applications of high dose steroids are probably not contraindicated as the overall exposure is low. With prolonged high dose therapy, the infant should be closely monitored for growth and development." (Medications and Mothers' Milk database, Dr Thomas Hale PhD). Since we do not know your dose we would recommend waiting about 12 hours to nurse for brief exposure to this medication.
