  • Prednisone

Hello, I am close to stopping breastfeeding completely.
I currently pump and feed one 5 oz bottle in the middle of the night and about 8oz to be mixed with solids throughout the daytime. Otherwise formula and other food source. I am always given a prescription of prednisone 30 mgs for 5 days when I travel in case of allergic reaction .
If I need to use this, will it be harmful to my 7 month old? Thank you.

    Angie55,

Prednisone is rated an L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount that transfers into breast milk is 1.8-5.3% of your dose. Steroids are usually ok as long as they are not used at high doses for prolonged periods of time. We do recommend for doses greater than 40mg to wait at least 4 hours to nurse, otherwise just take the medication after nursing, and half will be out in 2-3 hours.
