  • Carbocaine and breastfeeding

Would like to find out recommendation for carbocaine with breast feeding. Most reference said no data available.

Does the mother needs stop breastfeeding after dental procedure (e.g root canal) ? Or as soon as the numbness go away, then the mother can resume breast feeding? Or she should at least pump and dump the milk after the numbness disappear and resume at the next feeding? Thanks

    Aeonat:

You are correct that we do not have data on Carbocaine(mepivicaine), but as it is just another local anesthetic not too different from all the others, it is not likely that this product will cause problems for a breastfed infant. We have lots of data on lidocaine and Bupivacaine, and neither produce levels in milk that are hazardous.

If mom wants to be exceedingly careful, then she should wait about 2 half-lives or 6 hours. I don't think this is really necessary however. Bupivicaine, which is similar in structure, is virtually undetectable after 2-3 hours.
