  • Zaleplon / Sonata

Is Zaleplon / Sonata safe to use when breastfeeding a newborn? Would it have any effect on milk production? Use would be to hopefully counteract insomnia related to postpartum thyroiditis (hyper phase).

    IveeHill,

Sonata (zaleplon) is rated an L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount that transfers into breast milk is only 0.4% of your dose. We usually do not recommend sleep aides in the neonatal period, but this one maybe ok for short term use if you wait 2-3 hours to nurse after a dose and monitor for sedation and not waking to feed.
