  • Eovist / gadoxetate

The radiology department at the hospital I work at is asking about the safety of this drug, Eovist, generic name gadoxetate, for breastfeeding mothers during MRI. I did not find information on it on the forums or in the most recent edition of your book. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you!

    LCBrenda:

Eovist is a gadolinium-containing radiocontrast agent. We have about 5 or so of these radio contrast agents. The one that has been studied, is virtually excluded from the milk compartment. Levels in milk are low, and it is not orally absorbed.

Similarly, this drug has a half-life of about 1 hour, thus all of it would be gone in 5 hours. With this family of drugs, the American College of Radiology generally suggests that you do not need to discontinue breastfeeding at all. I generally suggest waiting a few hours (3-4) pump and discard the milk once, and then go on to breastfeeding.
