HIDA scans include the use of radioactive Technetiuim-99. While technetium is not very dangerous, and it has only a 6 hour half life, I often recommend a 12 hour or 24 hour interruption IF the mom can do this.
Basically, it comes down to, if you have stored milk use that for 24 hours. If not, then go ahead and breastfeed rather than expose infant to formula.
Recommendations should include a brief interruption of breastfeeding. Some authorities do not recommend interruption, but depending on the dose of Technetium, a waiting period of 12-24 hours would preclude most exposure to this radioactive Technetium.
All together, the risk of radiation exposure is low, but still some risk.
