I had no idea amalgam fillings contained mercury until recently. Last Friday I had a cracked analgam filling removed and replaced with resin composite. The dentist knew I was breastfeeding my 14 month old and gave the go ahead. She used a dam but no other precautions...not even cold water. Ive been breastfeeding frequently all week now, about 4-5 times during day and overnight as we bedshare. Im scared now! should i get our mercury levels tested? Should I wean? I cant abrupt wean but could lesson his time if needed. Im terribly upset from this whole thing.

You are probably ok to continue breastfeeding. People are exposed to low levels of mercury everyday through fish consumption, light bulbs etc., if you were having symptoms of mercury poisoning or had a high acute exposure to mercury we would recommend having you levels checked, but one recent filling is probably ok.
