  • Estrogen Cream and Breastfeeding

My OB prescribed an estrogen cream (not sure the name b/c I haven't filled it yet) for me to use vaginally b/c I had a 3rd degree tear and one small part has not completley healed. She says the estrogen will help encourage healing and to use it for a week or two. I just want to make sure that doing so won't adversely affect my 5.5 month old who is still exclusively breastfed.

    Dear aricha4,
The Estrogen cream is unlikely to have any adverse effects on your baby, however, there is a high probability that it can decrease your milk supply, especially if used intravaginally. You might want to try small amounts at first and see how your baby reacts. If you notice the baby is wanting to feed more frequently or is crying during a feed it might mean your milk supply is decreased.

Thank you! I can't believe that aspect didn't even occur to me! A decrease in milk production is just as important to me as any potential side effects on baby. I think I'll give it a little more time to heal naturally.
