  • Azathioprine (Imuran)

I have been asked by a mother who will be commencing on Azathioprine next week if she should :
stop breastfeeding once she starts this medication . Dr Hale's Medication and Mothers Milk reference has given this drug L3 Moderately safe. I have no experience with this drug, and I am concerned the advice is different to the what her Rheumtologist has given her. Her baby isnt rountinely cared for by a paeditrician.

    Sincerely

    June:

We have a lot of breastfeeding studies of the use of azathioprine (check my book). The relative infant dose is less than 0.26% of the moms dose. Levels in milk are very low.

But I would still have a pediatrician watch for changes in the immune system of the infant. They are really unlikely, but it would be worth doing in my opinion.
