  • Albendazole - Anthelmintic

A mother of a 3 week old baby is to be prescribed Albendazole 400mg PO BD for Neurocysticercosis for a duration of 30 days. How safe is the high dose and extended duration on the infant? Reports have only described single dose albendazole.

We have no data on the long-term use of this product. Very little of it actually gets to the infant (RID < 1%) and even less of this would be orally absorbed by the infant, but the prolonged exposure is troublesome. I'd suggest a regimen of half human milk and half formula, this would drop the clinical dose significantly for the infant. The infant should probably have a liver profile midway into therapy, just to be cautious.
