  • Natural Cleanse

Hello, I am trying to find out if I can do a 2 day cleanse while breastfeeding. The ingredients state they are all "natural." I am currently breastfeeding my 7 month old approx. 6 times a day. It is by the brand Isagenix and called Cleanse for Life.

Ingredients state: Niacin, Vitamin B6, B12, Ionic Alfalfa, aloe vera leaf gel, bilberry extract, blueberry extract, ashwagandha extract, raspberry juice extract, pau d'arco inner back extract, burdock root extract, fennel seed extract, rhodiola root extract, licorice root extract, suma root extract, Elutherococcus senticosus root extract, peppermint leaf extract, turmeric root extract, choline bitartrate, inositol, betaine HCl, l-methionine, fructose, potassium citrate, purple carrot, citric acid, lime juice.

When I ask the representative, she stated the ingredients were all natural and should be ok, it's the flushing of the toxins that will enter the breastmilk. I find this statement hard to believe. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

    thisisnicole, thanks for posting,

"We have a policy of not commenting on the safety of combination herbal products or mega-doses of vitamins. There is rarely satisfactory literature published on the safety of a complimentary therapy in breastfeeding women. It is not ethical for us to make a recommendation based on anecdotes. Also, herbal products are not regulated by the FDA and there can be significant variations in the potency and purity between different products or even between different lots of the same product. Herbs can also interact with each other and with prescription medications, so we tend to advise not taking them at all. As a general rule, breastfeeding is a time for simplicity. Focus on eating a balanced, nutritious diet and minimizing your use of extraneous stuff. When you do take a med or supplement, make sure that you're making that decision based on a clear understanding of the benefits you are likely to get. Benefits are often a lot better researched and documented than risks." -James Abbey, MD
