Is Zofran safe for breastfeeding? I recently saw a commercial stating that it was unsafe for pregnant mothers. Does it travel through the breastmilk?

    Hi, thanks for your post.

Zofran (ondansetron) does carry some risks for pregnant women. It should only used when the risks of the medication are less than the risks of untreated nausea and vomiting. There are no studies available that describe how this drug behaves in breastmilk. However, it is sometimes prescribed directly to infants, at doses far higher than what they would get through mother's milk, with good results. Safety/danger in pregnancy is not a good predictor of safety/danger in breastfeeding, although it seems like it would be. We give Zofran our second-best safety rating (L2).

Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if this has not completely answered your question.*(806)352-2519
