Is there new information about the safety of Macitentan and breastfeeding, please? Either for an infant (under 6 months) or a toddler. Thanks!

    Hi, thanks for your post.

There has been nothing new published that is specifically about macitentan and breastfeeding since the drug came out in the US. We looked at the drug's chemical properties and concluded that it would behave similarly to the other members of the same drug class. We give macitentan an L4 rating (out of 5) ("possibly hazardous") in regards to its lactation safety. We do not recommend breastfeeding on this drug. The other drugs in this class (dual endothelin receptor antagonists) are also L4s. Whether there is an alternative in another drug class is something that only your physician can decide using knowledge of your specific situation.

Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if this has not completely answered your question.*(806)352-2519
