  • Cialis/Tadalafil

I am an LC and have a client whose doctor gave her Cialis 5mg for daily use, which isn't approved for use in women. There's no listing for Cialis/tadalafil in the 2012 Medications and Mothers' Milk. Any insight? It's a phosphodiesterase inhibitor. Thanks!

    Hi, thanks for your post.

Tadalafil is indicated in women for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. This indication is marketed under the brand name Adcirca, although it is the same medication as Cialis. There have been no trials of tadalafil in breastfeeding women and animal studies are of limited value. Based on existing clinical experience with sildenafil, we do not expect tadalafil to pose a risk to infants exposed to very small quantities. The initial signs of toxicity in the infant would be flushing or hypotension. Priapism is also possible in male infants, but it is associated with pre-existing anatomical malformations of the penis.

Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if this has not completely answered your question. (806)352-2519
