  • Zofran and breastfeeding toddler

I am 6 weeks pregnant and still nursing my almost 3 year old at naptime, bedtime and the early morning when he wakes up. I will be needing Zofran due to Hyperemesis gravidarum. Would this be a problem? A pharmacist has said to me Zofran may build up in my milk over time and is therefore not safe. Do you know any alternatives if it may not be safe?

    Jviteritorres,

Zofran is rated an L2-no data-probably compatible. We do not know how much passes into breast milk, but it is commonly used in pediatric patients. The half life is only 3-4 hours so not likely to build up. Your child is older and probably not receiving very much milk at this time so it is probably ok to breastfeed using this medication. Monitor your infant for sedation, irritability, diarrhea or constipation, urinary retention.
