  • Methimazole 30 mg/day - Graves Disease

Hello. I am currently breastfeeding my 6 month old, and I was diagnosed with Graves Disease on Friday. My endocrinologist prescribed 30 mg/daily of Methimazole. He said it was safe for my baby, as did her pediatrician, who said he wouldn't need to monitor her thyroid function. However, I am still concerned mainly because 30 mg per day seems like a higher dose than has been used in most of the studies. I am considering weaning to formula before starting the medicine and would love any information you might have. Thank you.

    Cjnollner,

Methimazole is probably ok at 30mg a day. A lot of the studies are at the 20mg dose, but Dr Hale said as long as there is not a change in your infants thyroid functions it would probably be ok, so have your pediatrician monitor them closely.
