  • Progynova and breastfeeding

My son is 22months old today and currently demand feeds 8+ times per day. I have had a regular menstrual cycle for the past year and I wish to concieve (previously concieved with IVF due to sperm motility issues). We have already had 2 rounds of failed IVF and now the specialist wishes to change the treatment to frozen embryo treatment with HRT in order to thicken my endometrium. The Specialist has reconmmended that I stop breastfeeding as the medications are unsafe for breastfeeding, he wishes me to commence Progynova 2mgs TDS and progesterone pessaries. I called my local breastfeeding medicine helpline and they too recommended that I wean but I have seen on another post on this site that recommended that Progynova was safe. Please advise TIA

    Rangalou32,

Progynova and progesterone are probably ok to use in breastfeeding since your infant is older and is eating other foods. These medications may reduce your milk supply, but your milk supply will drop naturally with pregnancy. There are some rare cases of feminization effects such as gynecomastia (male breasts) with the use of hormones, but again less likely in an older child than a newborn who is receiving more milk.
