    New medication - tranexamic acid; promoted for decreasing heavy menstrual flow and menstrual pain. States it is non-hormonal and taken only during days of menstrual flow (max of 5 days)

    Can't find any other info.

    Dear Heather,

    According to the manufacturer, one percent of the mother's dose would be present in breastmilk. The half-life is 2-11 hours with 45 % oral bioavailability. The time the drug would be most concentrated is 3 hours after the dose. I spoke with Dr. Hale. He states the effects on an infant receiving a small amount of tranexamic acid are unknown; therefore, caution would be advised at this time for use in breastfeeding women.
